Madeline
I were mesmerised, just staring at her beauty - her perfectness, the smoothness of her body glistened as the sunlight draped its rays upon her naked body. I slowly walked towards her lazily running my eyes across her perfect form. I gently touched her body, running my fingers along and down. I felt a tingling inside as I sensed her coolness on my skin.
I was in love. But it was a love and jealousy at first sight.
This was the first time I saw her, this 1958 Wolseley, a magnificent car, in perfect condition. Its owner was Brendan, he was the cook at our station, he had been repairing it, and finally brought it out to show it off.
This story really should start 3 months prior, I had just arrived with Bluey, Joey and Frank at our new job, in a place called Nullagine, which is in the far north of Western Australia a new station that had been erected. Its owners were in Perth arranging for new equipment and stuff to be sent up. So men from far and wide were contacted for this work,, over a period of a couple of days men and machines arrived in bulk, our cook Brendan came the day after I did, we had got to know each other quite well, it seems that he had been a cook in one of the restaurants in Adelaide, working in a curry house, he had read of the outback so then he just decided enough was enough so he went bush, and worked at different homesteads around the outback.
About 4 days after everyone arrived, one of the blokes caught an infection, so a doctor had to be called out, the Royal Flying Doctor Service sent one doctor and a nurse by plane, Brendan and I volunteered to drive out to the airport and pick them up.
I first realised something was different with Brendan- as soon as I clapped eyes on her she was absolutely stunning, Long Black Hair, with legs right up to her neck. I told Brendan to close his mouth and stop catching flies, I think this woke him up from his dream.
During the short time she was with us, Madeline formed a close friendship with Brendan. Sometimes we saw them holding hands or just talking into the night, much to the jealousy of all the rest of us.
Finally when it was time for the doctor and Madeline to leave, I am sure I saw tears in Brendan's eyes as he waved goodbye. As she boarded the plane, she turned, then waved and cried, then disappeared from view.
For about 4 days all was quiet, then all of a sudden strange things started to happen, within a week the whole camp came down with food poisoning, then two weeks later the same thing happened. Both times Madeline and the doctor, flew up to treat everyone. It seemed that the only person who was not sick was Brendan. I guess after the forth or fifth visit, the penny drops and we realised that something was amiss
It took us awhile to figure out what was happening, but it seems that Brendan, was deliberately poisoning us, so that his darling would come and visit. he would add laxatives to a meal then dish it out to us, so of course we would be to sick to work.
Justice is swift in the bush, and 40 men who finally knew the truth were out for blood, fortunately Brendan got wind of the fact that we were out to throttle him, so he hightailed it into the bush.
We didn't find him until three days later, it seems that when he went bush he took little food with him, when he ran out of food, he started to eat the local bush food, like witchetty grubs and berries. but he had missed the good stuff, we heard him around 3am one morning in the food hut, looking for a feed.
An interesting thing happened next, 3 of our number went into the food shed to get Brendan, the first one exited the hut via the window, the second came crashing through the front door, the third guy was found later, it seems that Brendan was a whiz bang fighter , armed with a 10 inch saucepan, and a bread roller.
After much deliberation and understanding of what loneliness and longing can do for a guy we decided to forgive him, I really think no one else wanted an earbashing.
During the weeks that followed, it was a happy camp to work in. Food was great and sickness was down. Although we were still wary of Brendan's cooking, he did promise though not to poison us again.
Madeline visited us as often as she could, and slowly and surely, Brendan and she fell in love.
3 months later Brendan and Madeline tied the knot, and to this day are still married. They own a restaurant in Meekatharra, and if your ever passing and feel like some good honest Aussie tucker, then pop on over..
