The Walkers
Many dwellings in the Outback are of different structures,. Some live in caravans or sheds, but some Aussies prefer to live in huts with a roof but no walls. That way they can park the rover inside the house and do repair work on it at night.
Deep in the never never land, I met the Walkers. Mr Walker, his wife, son and daughter were a refreshing time in my life, they lived the way they thought best and didn't worry much about anything.
Their house was basically two rooms with a thatched roof and no walls just posts, around the outside of the roof. In the main room was the, Kitchen, lounge room also on the far side was the landrover, 2 feet were protruding from underneath it as Mr Walker did some repairs. The 2nd room was the main bedroom, the kids slept in bunk beds next to the motor bike and fridge.
They were quite agreeable for me to stay there for a couple of days, while my friends went home to visit family, they said to just pick a spot and set my bed. I took great pains to pick a warm spot. After dinner the first night, Mrs Walker gave me a tin full of stones, she told me that in the mornings before I got up I was to shake the tin loudly, that way the black snakes that crawl and sleep on my bed during the night will wake up and crawl away, I can tell you now, no one could have paid me to sleep in there, I slept in the rover.
This family had welcomed me into their home without question, such was and is the mateship in the bush. Admittedly I thought they were a bit over the top, especially when Mr Walker decided to go for a spin on the motor bike, picking up his son and planting him in the basket on the front of the bike. he then revved to full throttle, with dust flying everywhere, he let loose and took off, by the time he passed the sink he was doing 20klm per hour, they were doing 50klm as they passed the dressing table, a quick right turn and they entered the bush.
So it was with the Walkers and others in the Outback, they just enjoy what they have and have fun.
