Bluey
I always thought of Bluey, as the "Old man" of our small group. he was always the wise one. He was also the one that arranged how we got in touch with each other, so we could meet and catch up.
As a Roustabout working in the outback, I would do many jobs that would take me to different parts of Western Australia, sometimes I would work deep in the outback fixing bridges or perhaps working with a railway gang checking the rail line for defaults. When these jobs were completed then I would call Bluey's father to see if he knew of another job somewhere, in most cases he not only knew a job going but he would arrange the whole gang of us together for it.
The whole gang consisted of about 7 of us, we were just kids really, having met in various jobs, in the outback.
I first met Bluey in Meekatharra, we both signed on with a drover, to move cattle from town to his homestead, there were over 200 head of cattle, some horses and a load of goats. In all there were 7 white men and 4 blacks, the trip was to last only 15 days, but they were long ones, starting from sun up to sun down.
About 5 days out one of the white men, Josh and 2 of the blacks reported in sick, with the Josh saying he had a tooth ache, the black men just had sprains.
The boss made a quick examination of the offending tooth that was giving trouble, while I grabbed the Forceps and instruments and put them in a billy of water on the fire to boil. I distinctly remember josh moaning out loud as he sat waiting for us to start. I glanced across to look at the boss, he was rubbing his head while searching in the back of his truck for something. It seems that he had forgotten to pack the needles so he couldn't inject the pain killer into the gums of Josh.
At that point, that's when I really met Bluey, amidst all the moaning of Josh,
Bluey wanders up and right hooks Josh on the mouth, with the full force of this man, Josh stumbles backward and crumbled onto his back. Bluey just rubs his hands and makes his way back to camp. The operation to remove the tooth took exactly 2 minutes, we just kneeled over our patient while he was unconscious. When all was done and Josh was made comfortable - the boss and I walked over to the 2 blacks, they had stayed quiet during the episode with Josh, but when they saw us walking towards them, they stood up and ran away, their sprained bodies forgotten, it seems they didn't like our medical technique, and had high tailed it to the hills, we didn't see them again till morning.
