Cokklebiddy
Cokklebiddy is on the Nullarbor plain in Western Australia, it is deep in the outback, there is a main road passing through it but all they have there is a gas station and a pub/motel. There were about 12 of us working there, 9 men and 3 girls. It was a great place to be, cause on the one hand you saved most of your money on the other, I made some life long friendships there. I remember that's where I met Bloody Bob, every third word he said was Bloody. We were all in the bar one night, and he suggested that we organise a game, to liven things up, he said we should have a staring competition. So we all agreed and that the game would begin in 2 days. The hotel manager put forward 2 cartons of beer as a prize. Well for the next 2 days Cokklebiddy was transformed, from being a quiet place to something akin to a nut house. I would go to the toilet, and in the next cubicle was Pete, now its pretty damm difficult to go to the toilet when someone is staring at you. It was like this for 2 days, everyone was practising their staring technique, I felt really sorry for the tourists, they really copped a lot.
Also when the coaches came in, the passengers would walk from the car park to the hotel, it was only a short walk, but when you have 5 pairs of eyes staring at you, it can feel like a very long walk. Now in the bush, we get quite ferocious about things and betting was one of them, Bloody Bob started up a book and took bets on the competition, I thought it strange that he made himself favourite, I knew I couldn't win so I bet $200 on him, I remember he winked at me when I placed the bet, and said "safe as houses mate". On the night of the competition, it was a grand sight, we had 38 entrants, we had miners, staff and tourists, we also had a chap from Texas, we liked him cause he could tell a yarn like the best, he said everything was better in Texas, the women were bigger, the cars were better, etc etc, I once asked him what he was doing over here then.
Well we began, people were getting eliminated, 2 hours later and a lot of beer consumed, we were down to the final, between the Texan and Bloody Bob, all was silent, you could have heard a ant brake wind. Until finally the Texan blinked, the roar from the crowd was incredible. Bloody Bill was a hero, and very rich. I was the only one who had bet on him, he made a lot of money that night. Bloody Bob decided to retire and go visit his daughter in Perth, just before he left, he pulled me to one side and thanked me for my mateship, he also showed me his glass eye. I was stunned, if I had told anyone about it, he would have been lynched. But I felt close to him then, happy that he had shared this with me. Thinking to myself, hmmm wonder where I can get one of those. :)
