Them Aussies are Tuff
About 8 klm's out of town, my mates and I had found a small pond, when we investigated further we found a fresh water flow about 20 feet down. So with the bulldozer we carved out an area, about 20 feet across. It was pretty close to a rise of boulders, also there were a few trees around, so we got quite a bit of cover. I guess working long hours during the week, well, we just loved to get away when we could. In the outback, during the day it gets really hot, so we decided to did a deep whole in the ground - which we could drive the Landrover into. Then during our stay, the rover would be undercover out of the sun. The only problem we had was when we were ready to leave, we had to find a volunteer to drive the truck out, and to check if any black snakes had taken up residence in the cab.
One day, sitting around our pond, Bluey was in the deckchair sunbathing, Joey was reading the paper and I had decided to find the middle of the pond and try and sink a weight down the middle, we were curious how deep it went. The only thing I had was a fishing rod. All of a sudden a group of 6 army guys walked into our camp, and the look of amazement of their faces, well I will never forget it. They had walked 10 klm's with gear and equipment, to walk into us , fishing and sunbaking. They rushed to the water and drank deeply. When they had finished we said G'day and offered them a beer, which they readily accepted. Now our esky was underwater, so in walked Bluey, reached down, opened the lid and handed out beer. They were due to be picked up by helicopter and asked us if we wanted a lift. Bluey for ever the joker declined and just said we would run back into town later, to get more beer then run straight back here.
These guys must have thought we were really tough to be out here. Because I over heard the sergeant major shouting at his men the next day, about these three tough Aussies jogging out into the bush with an esky of beer and then running back later that night. I didn't have the heart to tell them about our rover hidden in the dirt.
