Mr Webster
Around 1980, I was working in Meekatharra in Western Australia. I had managed to get a couple of days off to help a mate track down some dead relatives of his. So we went to some cemeteries around, looking at old grave sites. Now at this point I must say that there must have been some really strange gravestone makers in the world and in Australia, well, we have our share to. I read on different stones, things like. "Here lies Fred and he's dead" Short, sweet and rhymes as well.
I met Mr Webster, when we visited a small cemetery, he looked rather strange, dressed in black waving a measuring tape. I said G'day, he just muttered something, then started measuring me up. Now you might think it weird to be in a cemetery, with a guy dressed in black who is all over you with a measuring tape, but out here in the bush. Weird things like this happen all the time, especially people muttering to themselves. We found out later that Mr Webster kept a book and details on everyone, so that when they died then he had the right measurements for the coffin and grave. I would hate to think what impression he gave to tourists, and also what tales they would have told back home, of Mr Webster, and that man that followed them around muttering to himself.
