Max
Mad Max the movie, was a great influence on my and my mates life in the bush, and a great influence on some of the people I met. When the movie first came out, we were introduced to the weird cars they drove, so me and me mates decided to build a car from scratch. It was basically a old landrover with the body ripped off, but we added a platform in front of the engine, on this we nailed down a couple of deck chairs and an esky in the middle.
One fine day, we were out doing a bit of Bush Bashing in our bomb, we decided to have a bit of fun, along the Nullarbor Highway about 5 klm’s outside of Cokklebiddy, there is a dirt track that runs level with the main road. Well along this road most traffic travels at around 110klm per hour and if no police are around then its usually double that.
Bluey and I volunteered to sit on the deck chairs while Joe drive the rover. We would wait for a Greyhound coach usually behind a small hill, when it passed we would start up and catch it. Now you have to imagine what we looked like. There was a half built car with a couple of deck chairs in front, and two idiots on the deck chairs drinking beer from the esky, and waving to the people on the back of the bus.
Well we got some interesting stares and quite a few people took photo’s. When we rolled into Cocklebiddy we had loads of people ask us if they could go for a ride. But by that time, my nerves had gone from hanging onto a flimsy deckchair travelling at top speed. Its very hard to walk nonchalantly away from a group of people when your whole body is shaking. I guess I was not as tough as I thought.
